Back To Earth
After all the excitement surrounding the Cubs first sweep of the Cards in Wrigley in five years, Glendon Rusch brought us all back to earth. Never, in all my years of baseball have I seen a pitcher give up solo homers in each of the four innings. Rusch again was bombed by the Reds. He gave up solo homers to Griffey, twice to Adam Dunn, and again off Bronson Arroyo. This is insane. Bronson Arroyo doesn't hit one home run in six years, six years, and he hits two in one week of Rusch. I hate to say it folks, but it is time to show Rusch the door. Don't tell me that Guzman or Hill couldn't have done just as well, if not better. Guzman looked great this spring, while Rusch was horrible. Guzman has potential and now is the time to see what he can do. Couldn't be any worse than today's performance. Hill also had a bad spring, and is a similar pitcher to Rusch. Both throw a lot of curves and sliders, but at least Hill can put something on his fastball. I would rather keep Jerome Williams as a long reliever, keep Hill and Guzman as starters, and flush Rusch down the commode. He had one decent season with the Cubs, we can't keep trotting this guy out here. Take a risk now on Guzman and Hill, before the Broke Arm Mountain boys get back.
I said it before, the Cubs owned the Cards and Astros last year, but couldn't beat Milwaukee, Cincy, or Pittsburg. So far they are 3-0 against the Cardinals, and 1-2 against the Reds. Maddux pitches tomorrow, but I doubt he will have a 25 mph wind helping him again. If he is off, we may see another Reds firework show. The Cubs need to strike early tomorrow and play well. Ramirez, Murton, and Pierre need to put in a little time in the cage as well. The Cubs need to think about winning each series, especially against divisional foes. With Maddux and Zambrano the next two games, it gives the Cubs a chance. Let's get back on track Cubbies!
Other notes;
-Wood pitched a simulated game and Prior threw off a mound. I am not going to believe any of the projections on their returns until I see them on the **** mound starting a major league game.
-Jones left the game with a right hamstring injury. Ramirez pulled a muscle in his butt! (only the Cubs). I wonder if either will start. I really want to see Angel Pagan play right field. Doubt Dusty would want two rookies in the outfield.
-Ohman gave up a grand slam and a solo shot, having to exit without getting anyone out, but Wuertz and Williams didn't look bad.
-There are many conspiracy theorists who feel that the balls are "juiced", to try and make sure there isn't more of a home run drop off since the 'roid testing got tougher.

Watch out, Crawly... history is about to be made.
I totally agree about Rusch. You will not hear me say this very often about anyone in Cubbie blue, but I HATE THAT GUY!!!! I said it last week before the first game against the Reds, and I said it yesterday. Why is this guy in the rotation?!? Yes, I know, desperation. But there HAS to be someone else. Anyone. Let a beer vendor take a stab at it, I don't care! Get this guy out of Chicago!
I had this same argument this past weekend with my dad who is a fan of Rusch's. Now I always respect my father's opinion, especially when it comes to baseball. But this time, he was wrong.
That being said, I of course have to say again, don't take your anger out on Woody. His progress is strong and you may be surprised by him this year. Let's just wait and see. As for Rusch, the verdict's already in. Guilty.

ok crawley and all the other cub die hards I dont want to sound to prophetic or anything, but i saw this rusch and williams thing coming and made my thoughts known. Well heres another; I know we are all down on Jones right now, but I honestly feel he'll come around. Heres my thought; move Pagan to left keep Jones in right put Murton down to triple a and let him regain his confidence bring up Pie and let him pinch hit/run. We'll have the fastest outfield in the majors and looking towards the future while we take care of the present. Let me know what you think.

Rusch is better in situational relief (one to two batters). Wuertz and Ohman- poor location and need to go. DSWEDO...You are so far off base you're on the Southside! Murton is an excellent hitter. His patience and eye for the zone is outstanding. Finally a hit-and -run batter in the line-up. He is also quick on his legs. Pagan is perfect where he is. Murton will come around. Last year and this Spring was no fluke! He is capable of hitting .320 at this level and Pagan is not!!! He also has more power! He is pne of the best young bats we've had in a long while. Look at the amount of pitches he pulls from the mound. We (as a team) need to be patient at the plate and increase pitch counts. Have you forgotten last year, when pitchers against us had counts of 60 in the sixth or seventh? If your anxious to get Pagan playing, put him in for Jones (a .267 careerhitter). Not that impressive. That would be a better move! Quicker with same hitting for average potential.
This is an exciting team. Stay positive and hope Wood and Prior can come back and solidify the rotation. This is one of the best balances of speed and power line-ups in the league!
