Moment of Truth

Well, we are getting close to finding out who makes the Hall of Fame.  Dawson_hr_1Everyone already knows that Tony Gwyn and Cal Ripken Jr are in, but who else?  The two former Cubs that were spotlighted on this blog were Andre Dawson and Lee Smith.  Goose Gossage also played for the Cubs, but only for one ineffective season (1988).  I have tried to read every baseball publication I could, trying to get a pulse on which way this vote is going to go. It seems like a lot of people are hopping on the Dawson bandwagon.   I am hoping that the public  backlash against Mark McGwire's juiced up numbers will help Dawson's case.  How the former MLB saves leader and a player of Dawson's caliber are not in the Hall blows my mind.  The announcement will be made at 2PM Chicago time, with the announcement will be carried live via BaseballChannel.TV on MLB.com.

The ballot was announced more than a month ago, and eligible members of the Lee_smtih_2_2Baseball Writers Association of America, who have logged at least 10 consecutive years, spent that month making their decisions. To be elected, a player's name must be inscribed on 75 percent of the approximately 590 ballots sent out. To be carried over for another year, a player must be named on at least 5 percent of the ballots. By rule, except under very special circumstances, a player must be retired for five years to become eligible, and can't remain on the writers' ballot for any longer than 15 years.

Let's all pray to the baseball gods that Lee or Andre get the call.
